Community Water Grants
(Update September 2008)
The Doncaster Bowling Club is pleased to have worked with the Australian Governments “Community Water Grants” scheme to assist in the conservation of water within our community.
A Grant received from the “Community Water Grants” scheme has allowed the club to install a 98,000 litre water storage tank which is fed from a sump tapped into the storm water drainage system from the clubhouse roof and is expected to save in excess of 450,000 litres per year. Water, captured in this way is stored in the new tank and gravity fed to the existing and upgraded brick tank, to be pumped into the irrigation system.
An extension to the above project has also resulted in the harvesting of water from the drainage system of our two large greens and this water is also being fed into the main tank for irrigation purposes.
The final link has been to improve the water pressure required to operate our sprinkler system following a managed reduction of pressure by Yarra Valley Water since mid 2007. To this end we have upgraded the potable (or mains supplied) water feed into the brick tank which is supplemented by the recycled water from the main tank, and installed a heavy duty pump linked to the brick tank and designed to manage the total irrigation of both the greens and gardens into the future.
The flow rate being achieved through the pump is now significantly higher and will provide a stronger, more even and consistent water coverage than that we could expect from the reduced flow levels Yarra Valley Water are now prepared to deliver.

(Update April 2008)
Doncaster members were pleased to receive a recent visit from Federal MP Kevin Andrews who dropped in to the club for morning tea and to be updated with progress on the installation of our 98,000litre Water Tank.
Kevin, who assisted the club in its bid for a “Community Water Grant”, was briefed by Executive Chairman Ian Golding and Greens Director Brian Ford on the tank installation and other projects which will significantly reduce our reliance on mains water into the future.
Water, captured from the extensive roof area of the club, will be stored in the new tank and gravity fed to an existing brick tank, which is being upgraded as part of the overall project. In addition water will be harvested from the drainage system of our two large greens and this will also be stored in the tanks for irrigation purposes.
The final link will see tank water directed in to the existing irrigation system and pumped on to the greens at a flow rate which will provide a more even and consistent coverage than that being achieved from the reduced flow levels now provided by Yarra Valley Water.
