2016 TUESDAY OPEN SECTIONAL SEMI FINALS – Doncaster Bowling Club

It was certainly a day of unpredicted events with the hot weather a great concern. We started play on time as the weather grew warmer. At midday the bell was rung and play postpone due to the temperature reaching 36 degrees. Doncaster 2nd Open team was well ahead at this point with one rink up 18 shots against Blackburn who decided to forfeit the match leaving Doncaster the winner to play in the Final.

The rest of the day there was no play until after 7:30pm with bowlers from all teams spending their time in comfort of the clubroom waiting for the temperature to drop below 36 degrees. The temperature hovered around 38 degress for several hours leading to frustration for all players. The club supplied sausages and chips in the late afternoon for all players for a small charge. The bar did a good trade.

Soon after 7:30pm, the temperature dropped below 36 degrees enabling the teams to continue play under the lights. It was neck to the neck in a close game where Whittlesea got a multiple against Doncaster 1st Open Team late in the game when on the second last end we were 7 down needing 8 for a draw.  We all thought this was the end of the game. A miracle happened and one rink got a seven with one end to go. We then proceeded and gained an extra shot and the game was even on the last end.

In order to decide the winner the three rinks had to play an extra end. The result: one rink up and one rink down with the other rink up by three shots. What a win ! What a day!
