APPLEWOOD CLASSIC OPEN FOURS 2018 – Doncaster Bowling Club

One hundred and sixty players from our own and 24 other various metropolitan clubs were rugged up and ready to go when a weather delay was announced. This allowed time for either another cuppa or another fortifying red!!

Then at 10.45 am everyone was out the door, down onto the greens, and playing the first of three games of 11 ends whilst hoping to win the Applewood prize money. We were lucky, the rain held off for most of the day.

Thank goodness a hot chicken lunch was served this year….it thawed everyone out.

By 4 pm, the three games were finished, and all the players came back inside for afternoon tea and to await the results.

First the raffles were drawn. Eighteen donated prizes and eighteen happy lucky winners, who left with their choice between various hampers, a set of suitcases, a power drill, wine, spirits, a mat, car cleaning accessories, crystal, or a car fridge.

Next were the three ‘resting toucher’ prizes, these went to Peter Oaten (Montmorency), Wendy Lyons (Eltham), and Ash Rowe (Doncaster).

The penultimate prizes of the three ‘shots up’, were won by a North Blackburn team skippered by Andrew Linford, then Ron Hayes’s Donvale team, and Brian Salvage’s Doncaster team.

For the big prize money, it was a tie for second and third place. So after calculations, third place was awarded to a team from Whittlesea, consisting of two husbands and two wives….Coral and Winston Taylor and Sue and John Roffey.

Second prize went to Geoff Smith’s Donvale team. His players were Davis Mattiazzo, Terry Cooper, and Neil Dusting. Both these teams were on 53 points.

First prize with 55 points went to William Tan’s composite team, who were. Ron Whittaker, David Hall, and Kevin Jones.

Thank you to “Applewood Premium Living Choices for over 55’s” who is DBC’s main sponsor. I have lost count of how many members now live there!! Thank you Alison who represented Applewood and congratulated the prize winners.

Lastly, but not least, my big big thanks goes to all those who planned, organised and helped during the last five months. There are too many to name, but I remember who you are and I will not forget. Thank you Richard Lovell for heading the committee this year, and special thanks to at least 20 helpers on the day and my friend Irene Garrett ……Lyn Goodman.
