“BE CONNECTED” DIGITAL TRAINING DAY.

On Sunday 20th February we held a “Be Connected” Lunch and Learn session in the club rooms. “Be Connected” is a Federal Government initiative to get people over 60 working better on their digital devices and online.

We have conducted Be Connected Lunch and Learn sessions over the last two years (Covid permitting), when generally we have had between 5 and 8 people attend each session.

The people attending have a range of knowledge about getting online – from people who didn’t how to get into the internet, to people who already know how to edit and upload photos , but now want to learn how to publish a photo book. There are 150 modules,  therefore there is something for everyone , for example learning how to be secure  online, identifying scams, learning how to pay accounts online and even games.

This Be Connected Lunch and Learn session last Sunday was an excellent event, all 26 attendees said that they learnt something new and interesting. Most learners finished two modules. Some learners enjoyed it so much that they ended up doing five modules. All learners said they would attend again.

We will be running a few more Lunch and Learn sessions over the next few months.  Tricia will run these until  mid April. Phil Rock with the help of Tak Shum will run the future Be Connected events.

Thanks goes to Dinesh and Champa Balgovind, Margaret Parker, Peter Hanson, Phil Rock, Tak Shum, Matt Cursio and Tricia  O’Connor for helping. It was the right ratio for helpers and attendees with 26 attendees, ( sadly 4 people registered but didn’t attend.)

The Club also has a new iPad, a Samsung Galaxy tablet and 2 sets of head phones to loan out for people to try, or use to learn to better connect online.

People, are, also welcome to borrow any of these devices if they are going to hospital.( It’s been helpful to some members already, when a couple shared an iPad. One could have the club loan iPad in hospital and their partner message them from the home iPad.)

The equipment ( and the tournament office printer and the Secretary’s laptop ) were all provided under a grant from the “Be Connected” group.

Keep an eye out for the next few smaller Be Connected Lunch and Learn sessions to be held in March and April. Places are limited and you will learn how to do something better online or on your computer, and it includes a free lunch……..Tricia O’Connor.

We are so fortunate to have Tricia O’Connor as one of our members. I want to thank her for her enthusiasm and help in all things digital. Please take advantage of her next lessons before she leaves for warmer climes…..Lyn Goodman..
